Jeff Mosser is a man who wears many hats. Not only is he a Plays for Presidents staff member (Senior Strategist/Social Media & Community Outreach Director), he is also directing 44 Plays for 44 Presidents in Boston, MA for the 2012 Festival. For the Plays for Presidents Festival, Jeff has elevated our social media outreach and increased cross-production conversation so effectively, I asked him for his thoughts on how important platforms like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr have been for our inaugural year – as well as how he plans to use those tools for 44 Plays.. at Bad Habit Productions.
GGB: Why do you think social media has been so important for this Festival? And how do you see it shaping the experience of those participating, as well as your experience directing the show?
JM: The great thing about social media is that it allows us to create a shared experience. It is a kind of community building that has allowed our productions to celebrate and commiserate over challenges large and small. “How are you handling the Truman “atom” prop? What does your presidential coat look like? Who is your favorite president?” Anyone doing 44 Plays for 44 Presidents has created a shared vocabulary, and social media allows us to spread these new colloquialisms across the country.
Building this shared experience then fosters how we present ourselves! Through Facebook and Tumblr we’ve given each production the opportunity to showcase what they are doing – again in a sense of shared celebration! It’s this sort of community building that starts to make this feel like we’re creating one big piece of art together from 44 separate venues.
Now that I am in the trenches of directing my own production, I’m finding that the greatest vantage point of the Festival and social media is that it creates buzz. “What is this show? It’s part of a festival? How many productions!?!” Social media is exciting, and peeking backstage has never been easier. Make your production accessible by sharing the collaborative art we’ve made, and use that excitement to pique your community’s interest.
44 Plays for 44 Presidents will run at Bad Habit Productions in Boston, MA from October 27 – November 11.
